Current Programs and Activities
Early Childhood Reading Program in collaboration with First Stop Child Care Center focuses on teaching children in grades per K - 6th how to read. It encourages the love of books and promotes good reading habits at an early age.
Unlocking The Gift: A collaborative program with The Langston Hughes Poetry Society of Pittsburgh children are encouraged to use their hidden gifts, and creativity to write short stories, poems, diaries and autobiographies.
Community Garden: In 2007 the children and some very committed volunteers planted a community garden. The purpose of the garden is to promote healthy eating habits, to expose children to new career opportunities & agriculture, nurture a sense of community ownership, and build solidarity among program participants.
Anger Management Sessions facilitated by Mercy Behavioral Health: The focus is on positive alternative solutions, coping with anger, positive self image, improve social skills, identifying anger and coping strategies.
Seniors Computer Classes Sponsored by OASIS: The program offers seniors an introduction to computers; it encompasses word processing, word processing basics and file management. Introduction to the World Wide Web, Exploring the internet, using Email, creating an Email attachment and how to search the internet.
Special Seminars: "Tips & Tricks" - Instructional sessions providing skill development in usage of computer applications -- such as word processing (MSWord, Corel WordPerfect, IBM Word Pro), spreadsheet management (MS Excel, Corel Quattro Pro, Lotus 1-2-3), database management (MS Access, Corel Paradox, Lotus Approach), presentation (MS PowerPoint, Corel Presentation, Lotus Freelance Graphics), and publishing for office workers, novice desktop publishers, and organizational/business personnel.
Video/Audio Transfer Service: A fund raising program service assisting the continual development of the technological environment for The Center.
On site resident Information Management (IT) personnel providing technical support and guidance to Center users.
On going computer applications sessions (MSWord, Excel, PowerPoint and Access)
