The vision of a community garden came to fruition in two thousand seven, children and some adults from the community planted the garden.  Some plants were donated by Sestili Nursery Inc.  Mr. Johnson and Mrs. Henderson took day trips to Janowski’s Farm in Clinton PA to purchase plants.  There were days when Mr. Johnson worked in the hot sun, rain and in the cold to insure the garden would be ready for planting.  The garden was planted late in the season and much to our disappointment only the neighborhood rabbits, and groundhogs reaped the benefits.

Some very committed volunteers from Landslide Community Farm, in two thousand eight, came alongside the children and adults to fight Japanese Knot Weed.  With no success, the battle was lost! They also built raised planting boxes and planted the donated starter plants and seeds.  The harvest was wonderful!!!!

A $5,000.00 grant was received in July of 2008 from the Mount Ararat Community Tithe Ministry – Thank You Reverend William Curtis and congregation for your generous contribution and support.  The monies will be used to purchase a High Tunnel (greenhouse) in the spring of 2009.  The High Tunnel will extend the growing season and enable us to expand the garden.  We are looking for volunteers in the spring to erect the High Tunnel and plant the garden.

The purpose of the garden is to promote healthy eating habits, to expose children to new career opportunities & agriculture, nurture a sense of community ownership, and team participation.

We look forward to seeing you in the garden in the spring of two thousand nine.
